Course Description Low back pain is one of the biggest challenges facing our society and physical therapists specifically are being challenged to provide evidence and direction for the care of the lumbar spine. This course will review critical thinking in relation to the current literature The participant will be able to perform a specific evaluation and determine a course of therapy based on the current evidence. The primary focus will be an EBM approach including: a review of evidence based medicine ; how to incorporate key EBM components into daily practice through asking focused clinical questions; performing literature searches efficiently; critically interpreting the data; and integrating the research into making decisions through a clinical reasoning approach. This basic course will be lab intensive with a ‘hands on’ learning approach as well as case study examples to integrate and emphasize a clinical focus. 14 contact hours Learning Objectives Following the conclusion of this course the participants will be able to: 1. Explain the evidence for the etiology of symptoms at the lumbar spine. 2. Explain the evidence for specific evaluation of the lumbar spine including diagnostic classifications 3. Explain the evidence for physical therapy management of lumbar spine 4. Understand sensitivity, specificity, Likelihood ratios and relation to physical therapy 5. Demonstrate joint mobility assessment and treatment including thrust manipulation 6. Demonstrate examination of neurodynamics and appropriate treatment interventions. 7. Demonstrate appropriate exercise interventions
